Unforgettable Morning Light Sunrise on the Menan Butte

Spring sunrise on Menan Butte

Why I Love It

Spring is in the air! After six months of cold weather, I am ready for some longer days and sunshine! I love the grass green and the flowers blooming and breathing life into this high desert landscape. I love nature photography for many reasons. One is that every time I go out, it’s like gearing up for a grand adventure where I never know what will happen. Not only that, but I get some great exercise and spend much anticipated time outdoors.

One area near my home in Idaho where I love to escape for my adventures and my nature photography is the Menan Buttes. I run and hike here often in all kinds of weather. I’ve run in the freezing snow, intense wind, misty fog, refreshing rain, and glorious sunshine. It is always an adventure on the Butte!

Interesting Facts

Did you know two of the world’s largest volcanic tuff cones are in southeast Idaho? The North and South Menan Buttes are two of many volcanic cones that rise above the Snake River Plain but are different from others in how they were formed. When magma erupts through water, tuff cones form. These cones are also the only ones in the United States formed in fresh water. Isn’t that amazing?? Learn more at the NASA Earth Observatory.

When You Visit

Although the South Menan Butte is on private land, you can visit and explore the North Menan Butte. Be prepared for wildlife! I’ve encountered snakes, deer, golden eagles, rabbits, scorpions, and even a mountain lion on my adventures. The hike itself is steep at the beginning until you reach the top. Find maps and info for this hike at BLM and AllTrails. It is one of my favorite hikes and a must on your next adventure there.

Nature Photography Inspiration

In the case of this photograph above, I had spent several days rolling out of bed long before sunrise and hiking to the top of this old volcano in the dark, searching for that one spot that was just right to capture the morning sunrise on the Menan Butte along with the wildflowers. Many times, all I got was some exercise and time spent crawling on the ground while keeping an eye out for snakes, tics, and any other unwanted encounters! When I saw the flowers, the rock formation, and the clouds, I knew all I had to do was set up and wait for the magic of sunrise.
